OpenSim. Where virtual land costs next to nothing, moderation often feels like a suggestion, and an astonishing amount of content bears an uncanny resemblance to creations you’ve already seen in Second Life.
It’s often promoted as the future of the metaverse, and perhaps one day it will be. For now, it’s a curious blend of genuine creativity, abandoned projects, malfunctioning scripts, and avatars sporting mesh heads that occasionally seem to have given up on facial expressions altogether. I arrived expecting a thriving digital frontier. Instead, I found a wonderfully chaotic patchwork of innovation, recycled content, ageing technology and determined enthusiasts keeping it all alive through sheer passion.
Still, it’s difficult to complain when the furniture is free… provided you don’t ask too many questions about where it originally came from.
